Wind Turbine

Wind Turbine
How to control the fluctuation of energy in wind turbine?

Due to the change in the wind speed, the speed of the wind turbine rotor changes, so at the output we get variable AC supply which means we do not get exactly constant voltage and frequency.

It can be control by controlling shaft speed and at the output by varying the load (Resistance).

I need to submit a case study about that so tell me about any site or e-book where I can find comprehensive details about that.

Basically there are two methods.

For small turbines (a few kilowatts) the turbine runs at whatever speed it likes, depending on the wind speed. There is a separate electrical converter to change the generated power into AC at mains frequency and synchronize it with the mains.

There may be a simple device to limit the max turbine speed just to prevent mechanical damage – for example a mechanical brake or lock, or spring-loaded turbine blades that spill the wind when the wind speed is high.

Large turbines (producing of the order of 1 MW or more per turbine) run at constant speed, generate power at mains frequency, and are directly coupled into the electricity grid when they are working. The speed is controlled the same way as for conventional power station generators. Without getting lost in the practical details, if the turbine tries to run at the wrong speed it is fighting against the whole of the rest of the power that is being generated in the electricity grid, so it loses the fight. As the wind speed changes, the amount of power generated changes. If the wind speed is too low, the generator acts in reverse as a motor to drive the turbine. (Of course in practice the turbine would be stopped completely, instead of doing that for a long period of time).

The rotational speed for large wind turbines is usually slow (10 or 20 rev/minute) with a gearbox to spin the generator at a higher speed. The blades are variable pitch so they can work efficiently at different average wind speeds.

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Darrieus wind turbine is a type of vertical axis wind turbine used to generate electricity from the energy carried in the wind. The turbine consists of a number of aerofoils usuallybut not always vertically mounted on a rotating shaft or framework. This design of wind turbine was patented by Georges Jean Marie Darrieus, a French aeronautical engineer in 1931. The Darrieus type is theoretically just as efficient as the propeller type if wind speed is constant, but in practice this efficiency is rarely realised due to the physical stresses and limitations imposed by a practical design and wind speed variation. There are also major difficulties in protecting the Darrieus turbine from extreme wind conditions and in making it selfstarting Author: Miller, Frederic P./ Vandome, Agnes F./ McBrewster, John Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 104 Publication Date: 2010/07/01 Language: English Dimensions: 5.98 x 9.01 x 0.24 inches

Floating Wind Turbine

Floating Wind Turbine

$57.72

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. A floating wind turbine is an offshore wind turbine mounted on a floating structure that allows the turbine to generate electricity in water depths where bottom-mounted towers are not feasible. The wind can be stronger and steadier over water due to the absence of topographic features that may disrupt wind flow. The electricity generated is sent to shore through undersea cables. The initial capital cost of floating turbines is competitive with bottom-mounted, near-shore wind turbines while the rate of energy generation is higher out in the sea as the wind flow is often more steady and unobstructed by terrain features. The relocation of wind farms into the sea can reduce visual pollution if the windmills are sited more than 12 miles offshore, provide better accommodation of fishing and shipping lanes, and allow siting near heavily developed coastal cities.

Microprocessor-based controller provides voltage regulation of either 12 or 24V output, peak power tracking, and silent stall control in high winds (see more info below). At sea the increased blade tip angle improves ability of blades to both engage wind at low speeds as well as shifting the point at which blades would typically flutter in high winds to a point above the rotational speed allowed by the unit’s electronic controls. In port, hysteresis braking locks the turbine in a silent regulation mode once the batteries are fully charged, preventing the turbine from fluctuating in and out of regulation mode. The result is quieter, more unobtrusive operation both under sail and when docked. The tail-fin of this marine turbine model is

Optimization Studies on the Ducted Wind Turbine.

Optimization Studies on the Ducted Wind Turbine.

$115.71

The concept of the Ducted Wind Turbine (DWT) has received significant research interest over the last fifty years. Several attempts to commercialize the DWT have been made in the past, but a commercial version does not exist at present. One of the primary concerns has been the size of the duct of the DWT and the economical and structural challenges relative to its design. It has been observed, both from existing as well as new experimental results at UNH, that significant reductions in the size of the duct can be achieved by better modeling the three dimensional flow in the duct. Specifically, the inherent swirling nature of the turbine wake flow is found to have significant influence on delaying the boundary layer separation in the diffuser, and thereby improving the diffuser performance considerably, concurring with Prasad and Ostrach (1971); McDonald et al. (1971); Senoo et al. (1978); Okhio et al. (1983). This improvement in diffuser performance facilitates a smaller diffuser, and hence a smaller duct. The present work addresses a DWT design optimization study in two parts: (1) a preliminary theoretical analysis showing a potential to reduce the length of the diffuser by up to 40, and (2) experiments that were carried out on three DWT scale models that were prototyped at UNH to study the influence of swirl on the diffuser pressure recovery. Additionally, results from experiments have also shown scope of power augmentation of more than 40 through the use of a duct, compared to a samerotordiameter unducted turbine. Ultimate Strength of a Large Wind Turbine Blade

$95.59

Titel short: Ultimate Strength of a large WTblade The present work contains a study of the structural static strength of wind turbine blades. A combination of experimental and numerical work has been used to address the most critical failure mechanims and to get an understanding of the complex structural behaviour of wind turbine blades. Four failure mechanisms observed during the fullscale tests and the corresponding FEanalysis are presented. Elastic mechanisms associated with failure, such as buckling, localized bending and the Brazier effect, are studied. In the thesis six different types of structural reinforcements helping to prevent undesired structural elestic mechanims are presented. Five fullscale tests have been performed. Comparisons of the ultimate loads observed in the fullsacle test are presented and conclusions are drawn based on the mechanisms found. The thesis consists of a comprehensive summery and a collection of three papers and four patent applications. Wind Turbine Control Systems: Principles, Modelling and Gain Scheduling Design

Wind Turbine Control Systems: Principles, Modelling and Gain Scheduling Design

$150.75

Modern wind turbines generally operate at variable speed in order to maximise the conversion efficiency below rated power and to reduce loading on the drive-train. In addition, pitch control of the blades is usually employed to limit the energy captured during operation above rated wind speed. The higher complexity of variable-speed variable-pitch turbines is offset by the benefits of control flexibility, namely, higher conversion efficiency, better power quality, longer useful life; because of the immediate impact of control on the cost of wind energy, reliable high-performance controllers are essential in making wind technology competitive. In Wind Turbine Control Systems the application of linearparameter varying (LPV) gain scheduling techniques to the control of wind energy conversion systems is emphasised. This recent reformulation of the classical gain scheduling problem allows a straightforward design procedure and simple controller implementation. The monograph provides a thorough coverage of wind turbine control, including: a an overview of the principles of wind energy conversion; a the control-oriented modelling of wind turbines; a an in-depth analysis of the most common control strategies; a the design of LPV gain-scheduled controllers for both fixed- and variable-pitch, variable-speed wind turbines. Wind Turbine Control Systems is primarily intended for researchers and students with a control background wishing to expand their knowledge of wind energy systems. The book will be useful to scientists in the field of control theory looking to apply their innovative control ideas to this appealing control problem and will also interest practising engineers dealing with wind technology who will benefit from the comprehensive coverage of the theoretic control topics, the simplicity of the models and the use of commonly available control algorithms.

Aerodynamics of Wind Turbines

Aerodynamics of Wind Turbines

$127.47

Aerodynamics of Wind Turbines is the established essential text for the fundamental solutions to efficient wind turbine design. Now in its second edition, it has been entirely updated and substantially extended to reflect advances in technology, research into rotor aerodynamics and the structural response of the wind turbine structure. Topics covered include increasing mass flow through the turbine, performance at low and high wind speeds, assessment of the extreme conditions under which the turbine will perform and the theory for calculating the lifetime of the turbine. The classical Blade Element Momentum method is also covered, as are eigenmodes and the dynamic behavior of a turbine. The new material includes a description of the effects of the dynamics and how this can be modeled in an aeroelastic code, which is widely used in the design and verification of modern wind turbines. Further, the description of how to calculate the vibration of the whole construction as well as the time varying loads has been substantially updated. This is the essential reference for both engineering students and others with a professional or academic interest in the physics and technologies behind horizontal axis wind turbines.

Energy: Wind: The History of Wind Energy, Electricity Generation from the Wind, Types of Wind Turbines, Wind Energy Potential,

$45.39

Since early recorded history, people have been harnessing the energy of the wind. In the United States in the late 19th century, settlers began using windmills to pump water for farms and ranches, and later, to generate electricity for homes and industry. Industrialism led to a gradual decline in the use of windmills. The steam engine replaced European water-pumping windmills, and in the 1930s, the Rural Electrification Administration’s programs brought inexpensive electric power to most rural areas in the US. However, industrialization also sparked the development of larger windmills, wind turbines, to generate electricity. After experiencing strong growth in the mid-1980s, the U.S. wind industry hit a plateau during the electricity restructuring period in the 1990s and then regained momentum in 1999. Industry growth has since responded positively to policy incentives. Although wind power currently provides only about 1% of U.S. electricity needs, it is growing more rapidly than any other energy source. Wind power has negligible fuel costs, but high capital costs. The estimated average cost per unit incorporates the cost of construction of the turbine and transmission facilities, borrowed funds, return to investors (including cost of risk), estimated annual production, and other components, averaged over the projected useful life of the equipment, which may be in excess of twenty years. Modern wind turbines fall into two basic groups: the horizontal-axis variety and the vertical-axis design. Utility-scale turbines range in size from 100 kilowatts to as large as several megawatts. Larger turbines are grouped together into wind farms which provide bulk power to the electrical grid. Single small turbines (below 100 kilowatts) are used for homes, telecommunications dishes, or water pumping. Small turbines are sometimes used in connection with diesel generators, batteries, and photovoltaic systems. These systems are called hybrid wind systems and are typically used in remote, off-grid locations where a connection to the utility grid is not available. A key challenge for wind energy is that electricity production depends on when winds blow rather than when consumers need power. Wind’s variability can create added expenses and complexity in balancing supply and demand on the grid. Recent studies imply that these integration costs do not become significant (5%-10% of wholesale prices) until wind turbines account for 15%-30% of the capacity in a given control area. Opposition to wind power arises for environmental, aesthetic, or aviation security reasons. New public-private partnerships have been established to address more comprehensively problems with avian (bird and bat) deaths resulting from wind farms. Some stakeholders oppose the construction of wind plants for visual reasons, especially in pristine or highly-valued areas. Wind technology has improved significantly over the past two decades, and wind energy has become increasingly

Radial Turbine

Radial Turbine

$92.4

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles A Radial turbine is a turbine in which the flow of the working fluid is radial to the shaft. The difference between axial and radial turbines consists in the way the air flows through the components (compressor and turbine). Whereas for an axial turbine the rotor is impacted by the air flow, for a radial turbine, the flow is smoothly orientated at 90 degrees by the compressor towards the combustion chamber and driving the turbine in the same way water drives a watermill. The result is less mechanical and thermal stress which enables a radial turbine to be simpler, more robust and more efficient (in a similar power range as axial turbines). When it comes to high power ranges (above 5 MW) the radial turbine is no longer competitive (heavy and expensive rotor) and the efficiency becomes similar to that of the axial turbines. Semi-Empirical Aeroacoustic Noise Prediction Code for Wind Turbines

Semi-Empirical Aeroacoustic Noise Prediction Code for Wind Turbines

$21.02

OCLC Number: 55966071 Excerpt: …Semi-Empirical Aeroacoustic Noise Prediction Code for Wind Turbines Introduction One of the most significant drivers for wind turbine design is the amount of acoustic noise that a turbine radiates. This issue is particularly important because turbines are placed closer to load centers, which typically have large population densities and restrictive noise ordinances. To date, the rotational speeds of most wind turbine designs have been limited by the acoustic emissions from the blades, for which the sound intensity is approximately proportional to the tip speed raised to the fifth power. Unfortunately, tip speed is also related to the cost effectiveness of the wind turbine design. Increasing the tip speed, even slightly, can have a dramatic effect on the amount of energy captured by a wind turbine and, hence, directly influences the cost of energy for a given design. Therefore, it is very important to be able to understand, model, and predict the aeroacoustic noise for a given turbine in the design process and to make design changes before prototypes are built and tested. The noise prediction subroutines written to interface with FAST 1 ] allow these predictions to be made. This report explains how the code was written, what validation against test data was performed, and how a user can implement the code to predict noise for any given turbine design. Aeroacoustic Noise Prediction Model The model developed for the prediction of aeroacoustic noise is based on six different noise sources that are assumed to independently generate their own noise signature. The assumption of independence is founded on the idea that the mechanisms for each noise source are fundamentally different from each other or occur in different locations along a turbine blade, such that they do not interfere with one another. These independent noise sources are superimposed to obtain the total noise spectra emitted from the wind turbine rotor. Five of the…

Wind-Diesel Systems: A Guide to the Technology and Its Implementation

Wind-Diesel Systems: A Guide to the Technology and Its Implementation

$10.72

Wind is currently the most promising renewable source of energy. After considerable technical development, wind turbine technology is now entering a period of rapid commercialization, especially where it applies to individual farmsteads, small communities in many remote or island areas, and in much of the developing or underdeveloped world where there is no access to an electric grid supply. This book looks at how, by integrating a wind turbine into such communities, fuel consumption can be reduced and money can be saved. Technically this is not easy, because variations in the wind that occur from second to second can cause power quality and logistic problems. Wind diesel technology has to date been largely a research topic. However, the experts who have written this book and who have collaborated since 1985 on a technical basis under the auspices of the International Energy Agency, recognize that the relevant knowledge, understanding, and hardware are now sufficiently well advanced to allow commercial, reliable schemes to be implemented. This book aims to speed this process by offering a comprehensive introduction to the various aspects of the technology for possible developers.

Malawi is a country battling AIDS, drought and famine, and in 2002, a season of floods followed by the most severe famine in fifty years brought it to its knees. William Kamkwambas family were farmers, and relied on their maize crop to feed them for the year and bring in money by selling the surplus. But after many lean years, finally there was no more. By Christmas 2001 they were running out of food – with months before they could harvest their crop again. At 14 years old, William had been forced to leave school as there was no money to pay the fees. Borrowing library books to continue his education, William picked up a book in English about energy, with a picture of a wind turbine on the front cover. Fascinated by science and electricity, William decided to build his own. Ridiculed by those around him, exhausted from his work in the fields every day, slowly he built it with scrap metal, old bicycle parts and wood from the blue gum tree. It has changed the world in which William and his family live. Only 2% of Malawi has electricity; and the windmill now powers lightbulbs and a radio at their compound, and he has built more windmills for his school and village. When news of Williams invention spread, people from across the globe offered to help him. Soon he was re-enrolled in school and travelling to America to visit wind farms. This is his story – his attempts to teach other Africans to help themselves, one windmill, one lightbulb, at a time.

Small Wind Turbines: Analysis, Design, and Application

Small Wind Turbines: Analysis, Design, and Application

$151.16

Climate change, environmental impact and declining natural resources are driving scientific research and novel technical solutions. Green Energy and Technology serves as a publishing platform for scientific and technological approaches to "green" – i.e., environmentally friendly and sustainable – technologies. While the main focus lies on energy and power supply, the series also covers green solutions in industrial engineering and engineering design. Green Energy and Technology is a monograph series addressing researchers, advanced students and technical consultants, as well as decision makers in industry and politics. The level presentation ranges from instructional to highly technical. Small Wind Turbines and its associated software provide a thorough grounding in analysing, designing, building and installing a small wind turbine. Small turbines are introduced by emphasising their differences from large ones and nearly all the analysis and design examples refer to small turbines. The software provided with the book includes MATLAB programs for power production and starting performance, as well as programs for detailed multi-objective optimisation of blade design. An Excel spreadsheet is provided for applying the simple load model of the IEC standard for small wind turbine safety. Small Wind Turbines and its accompanying software represent the distilled outcome of over twenty years experience in fundamental research, design, installation and field testing of small wind turbines. Besides being a suitable reference for student projects and detailed design studies, it also provides important background material for engineers and others using small wind turbines for remote power and distributed generation applications.

Regenerative Turbine Pump

Regenerative Turbine Pump

$148.16

Regenerative turbine pumps are rarely used or tested, and many of hydraulic machines books do not provide any information about this type of pumps. So, this work is conducted to study the mechanical and hydraulic designs and performance of regenerative turbine pump theoretically and experimentally. The theoretical performance of the regenerative turbine pump is expected by conducting a theoretical model. Theoretical analysis of flow thorough the pump is constructed depending on some assumptions that simplify this analysis. And rational formula that describes the relationship between the theoretical imparted head and flow rate is obtained. Mechanical and hydraulic designs based on the required pumping head and flow rate are investigated. These mechanical and hydraulic designs are used to construct the regenerative turbine pump tested pump and the hydraulic test rig. Actual performance of the regenerative turbine pump is tested. The theoretical analysis is compared with the actual performance of the pump and a correction of the theoretical relation and empirical formula is obtained. Based on empirical and correction relations, the hydraulic design of this pump can be obtained.
